confession

i loved you long before you came into my life.
built you in my thoughts and manifested you
from my dreams. i’d write the details of you
in a journal –

like an affirmation or a declaration.
read you out loud to my own reflection,
every night. and tucked you neatly into my bible like a written petition.

i never wavered in who i wanted you to be.
never lessened my expectations
or lowered my standards. i was resolute
and fully confident one day you would come
and find me.

and now that you’re here, i know this to be true –

there is power in the pen and the tongue,
because the one standing here holding my hand, the one here sharing this life with me now,
is you.
